1- Medal for the defense of Stalingrad


Instituted at the request of the People's Commissariat by Decree on December 22 of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (Gazette of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, 1942, No. 47).


According to its regulation, it had to be granted to all defenders of the city - soldiers of the Red Army, Navy, NKVD and civilians - always with the confirmation of their actual participation, through the lists of military divisions, hospitals ... etc. .


The defense of Stalingrad lasted between July 12, 1942 until November 19, 1942, occupying a preeminent place in the history of the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet troops found themselves outnumbered both numerically and technically by General's 6th German Army Paulus. More than 140 days of furious urban combats and bombings could not with the extreme resistance of the defenders of the city, on November 19, 1942 the Soviet forces launched a counteroffensive that ended with the 6th Army encircled and defeated. On May 1, 1945 the city of Stalingrad received the title of "Hero City".


The Stalingrad Defense Medal Approximately 760,000 people were awarded.
